Each week we write about the science behind the protection of the environment. Previous Science on Wednesdays.

By Paul t. Anastas, Ph.d.

Esteemed guests sat before a group of colleagues and old friends to discuss their experiences at ORD, helm share their hallintaoikeusmuodot highlights and provide insights on issues of science the EPA has 40 years of the community.

Before becoming an Assistant Administrator ORD I taught history of shaping a comprehensive range of environmental courses of events. I delved into Love Canal, three mile island, Bhopal and later tragedies, such as the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina case studies. It was a honor to sit among lived through these exceptional events, not only were entrusted with the task to answer in response to EPA's scientific resources to the lifting of the challenge.

In its response to today's environmental challenges, such as the Gulf of Mexico, oil spill-tragedy I have had the good fortune, tap the unparalleled experience of this group.I've heard more than a few of them directly and have been able to rely on they created research infrastructures.

A strong argument can be made that no one has had more impact on the EPA's impressive research legacy than these eight persons. They were often faced with a blank drawing slates, follow up is not templates. but they still opportunities Where others saw none. they lived in the world, which was not considered as hazardous waste sites, did not assess the risks, you do not understand pollution prevention, had not been using scientific decision making … and they saw the enormous possibilities.

We can and must learn from the past so that we can continue to create and live in the future. It was particularly exciting to hear the words of several former executives, as well as an incentive for the Path forward, our plans for the implementation of the European Community research strategy focused on Science and innovation for a sustainable future.Receive support it seems to me even more confidence that the European Community for research is moving in the right direction.

Milestone event, indicating which is certainly a continuous cooperation was a former Assistant administrators. I am a member of the Group of privileged Rookie, and even if they have been transferred to other harrasteisiin was so proud to welcome them home.
